FACTS ABOUT NEW YORK

-New York has the most industry in the USA.
-New York has about 8.080.000 inhabitants
-it is the biggest town in the USA
-in front of Manhattan are the two islands Ellis Island and Liberty Island
-Manhattan is the centre of New York,the business and administration part with the skyscrapers ,Wallstreet (there are the big banks ) and Broadway (Broadway is 25 km long)
-the five parts of New York (Bronx,Queens,Brooklyn,Richmond and Manhattan ) are connected by bridges
-New York has 4 airports
-it has over 50 radio and movie stations
-in New York are more then 50 museums (the biggest are the Metropolitan Museum ,the Museum of Modern Art and the American Museum of Natural History)
-in New York are more then 300 theaters

NEW YORK HISTORY

1524
Giovanni Verrazano sails in the New Yorker Upper Bay and discovers there a river which later is called Hudson River .

1609
The Englishman Henry Hudson enters as the first white man the island which the Red Indians call "Mannahatta".

1624
Wallonen settle on the Hudson River : 30 families live at the south of "Mannahatta".

1626
The first governor of the settlement "Nieuw Amsterdam" , Peter Minuit , bought Manhattan from the Red Indians for 24$.

1647
Peter Stuyvesant is the governor . Later he will be a dictator and he suppresses the political opposition and the religious liberty . In the first year of the English - Dutch war , he must deliver the town to the Englishmen . Niew Amsterdam is now called New York .

1690
New York is one of the biggest towns of North America .

1776
The colonies explain their independence from Great Britain . The war of independence begins .George Washington is the loser of the battle in Long Island . British troops occupy New York until 1783.

1785
New York is the capital of the United States of America , but only for 5 years .

1790
At the first official count of people New York has 33000 inhabitants .

1792
The first stock exchange , the New York Stock Exchange, opened in Wallstreet .

1797
Albany is the new capital of New York (the US-Staate) .

1811
All streets of New York were built as a chessboard pattern .

1825
After the people have built the Erle-Canal , New York is a big industrial town.It is conected with other big lakes by the Hudson River.

1835
A big fire destroys a lot of houses near South,Broad and Wallstreet.

1848/49
After the failed revolution in Germany a lot of politician refugees come to New York . They live in the Lower East Side and near the Bowery.

1851
The first "New York Times" is printed on the 18 . September.

1853
A World-Show is in the Crystal Palace at the corner 42nd Street / Sixth Avenue.

1858
Calvert Vaux and Frederick L. Olmsted give plans for the building of the Central Park to New York.

1861-1865
In the Secessionwar New York fights together with the Northstaates.In the war they fight against the slaves in America.

1880
The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be opened .

1883
The Brooklyn Bridge , the longest bridge of the world for a long time , is finished. Another head-line is that the Metroplotitan Opera has made his first show.

A lot of people from China were coming . Chinatown comes into being .

1886
The French people give the Statue of Liberty as a present to New York.

Ellis Island , the little island in front of Mannhattan , is the new place were people immigrating to the USA must go through first.

The 5 parts of New York which are Mannhattan,Brooklyn,Queens,Staten Island and Bronx are now together Greater New York.It live 3.437.000 inhabitants . Only in London are more people.

New York has his first building with 20 floors.

The first part of the Subway is ready.

In New York is the highest building of the world : the Woolworth-Building.

Womens are allowed to elect .Another head-line is that no alcoholic drinks are produced in the USA until 1932. Because of this al lot of illegal pubs are in New York.

In Wallstreet is the "Black Friday" . An economic desaster is beginning all around the world .

1931
In spite of depression the Empire State Building will be build .

1939
10 Years after his foundation the Museum of Modern Art moves into his new building in 53rd Street.

1943
In Harlem where the black people live are big riots .

1946
New York is the new residence of the UNO.

1958
The new Seagram Building will be opened .

1959
The Guggenheim Museum will be opened . A lot of people discuss about his wilful look .

1965
New York has no current for 16 hours.

1969
The team of Apollo 11 (Neil Armstrong,Edwin Aldrin,Michael Collins) enters as the first team the moon . The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts will be opened.

New York loses attractive power . More and more people and firms leave New York. This trend did not stop until 1976.

The World Trade Center is opened.

The financial difficulties reach their climax .

New York has again no current for 27 hours.

Woody Allen has made the most beautiful movie about New York :"Manhattan".

John Lennon (The Beatles) died near Central Park.

At the 5th Avenue the Trump Tower ,an office ,apartment and business building is built.

"Black Monday " in Wallstreet. The World Financial Center will be opened .

Every 4th New Yorker has not enough money.There are a lot of poor people in N.Y.

1989
David Dinkins is the first black mayor in New York.

1991
The first time in the history of this town are the white people not the absolute majority.
